Allure Names Prequel Gleanser Best Moisturizing Face Wash for Mature Skin
Prequel's $18 Gleanser, with 50 percent glycerin, leads Allure's 2026 moisturizing face wash list. CeraVe and Avène follow at $19-$20; dermatologists say cleansers still cannot replace moisturizer.
Counter notes
- Prequel Gleanser ($18) won Best Overall; glycerin makes up 50% of its formula and it won a 2026 Best of Beauty Award.
- Six cleansers made the list, priced from $18 (Prequel) to $56 (Elemis Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil).
- Dermatologist Nazanin Saedi, MD: "Cleansers are not a replacement for your moisturizer."
- La Roche-Posay Toleriane Moisturizing Milky Cleanser uses a nine-ingredient formula and also won a 2026 Best of Beauty Award.
- Skinfix Balancing Soft-Foam Clay Cleanser pairs 1% betaine with 4% kaolin clay for acne-prone skin.
Prequel's $18 Gleanser, a glycerin-based cleanser whose name is a mash-up of glycerin and cleanser, took Best Overall in Allure's 2026 roundup of moisturizing face washes for dry, mature skin. Glycerin makes up 50 percent of the Prequel Gleanser Glycerin Body and Face Cleanser, a 2026 Best of Beauty Award winner, according to the magazine's review.
The dermatologist guiding the selection, Kseniya Kobets, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care, sets one rule: "the goal is clean skin, not 'squeaky-clean' skin." Her ingredient checklist includes humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, plus barrier-supporting actives like ceramides and squalane.
The full winners list:
- Best Overall: Prequel Gleanser, $18
- Best Drugstore: CeraVe Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser, $19
- Best for Redness: Avène Tolérance Extremely Gentle Cleanser, $20
- Best for Makeup Removal: Elemis Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil, $56
- Best for Sensitive Skin: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Moisturizing Milky Cleanser
- Best for Acne-Prone Skin: Skinfix Balancing Soft-Foam Clay Cleanser
Note the price spread. The drugstore picks cost $19 to $20. The one luxury pick costs $56. Nothing in the dermatologists' comments explains why the Elemis oil costs nearly triple the CeraVe.
What does each winner promise — and admit?
The Prequel Gleanser pairs its 50 percent glycerin base with oat extract and aloe. It is fragrance-free and suits all skin types, especially sensitive skin. Kobets defends the star ingredient: "Glycerin gets underestimated, but it's an excellent humectant, meaning it attracts water and helps the skin hold onto it." The review discloses one limit: the low-foam texture will disappoint users who want lather. Beauty director Sarah Kinonen tested it across twice-daily showers and reported her seasonal eczema improved on a fragrance-free routine.
CeraVe's Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser, $19, contains glycerin, hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Nazanin Saedi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, says the formula "includes ceramides to help support the skin barrier as well as humectants to help pull hydration into the skin." Kobets calls the cream-to-foam texture "the best of both worlds." It targets normal to dry skin and is fragrance-free.
For reactive skin, Kobets recommends restraint. "With redness, I prioritize fragrance-free formulas and barrier preservation rather than trying to 'deep clean' the skin," she says. The Avène Tolérance cleanser, $20, follows that logic with thermal spring water, niacinamide and glycerin in a soap-free formula that removes makeup and sunscreen without irritation.
The Elemis Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil, $56, blends pomegranate, winter rose and chia seed oils. Saedi credits the fatty acids: they "support the skin barrier and leave the skin feeling softer and more comfortable." It is the only winner in the top tier that is not fragrance-free — a real caveat for readers following Kobets' own advice on fragrance as a common irritant. Contributor Sheryl George confirmed it removed a full face of makeup without stripping.
La Roche-Posay's Toleriane Moisturizing Milky Cleanser, a second 2026 Best of Beauty winner, uses a nine-ingredient formula built on thermal spring water and glycerin. Saedi calls it "excellent for allergy-prone or sensitive skin types." Commerce editor Sarah Han cited the large bottle as a household advantage.
Skinfix's Balancing Soft-Foam Clay Cleanser takes a measured approach to breakouts: 1 percent betaine, a humectant, against 4 percent kaolin clay to absorb oil. Contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai reported fewer chin and jawline breakouts, but flagged that the product does not remove eye makeup. It is not fragrance-free.
Can a cleanser actually moisturize?
Only partly, and both dermatologists say so plainly. "Cleansers are not a replacement for your moisturizer," says Saedi. Kobets adds that a well-formulated cleanser can "minimize the loss of natural moisturizing factors and lipids while depositing humectants or emollients." For extremely dry or eczema-flaring skin, Saedi advises rinsing with water in the morning and cleansing only at night; Kobets warns that overwashing can compromise the skin barrier.
How were the picks tested?
Allure says editors tested every product and scored them across five categories: ingredients and efficacy, packaging, protection, texture and wear. Dermatologists vetted formulas. What the methodology does not state: the number of testers per product, the trial duration or whether any product failed screening.
The practical takeaway is modest but real. Effective hydration cleansers sit at the $18-to-$20 drugstore tier, and the two 2026 award winners are both fragrance-free — a signal worth watching as mature-skin shoppers head into the low-humidity winter months Allure itself flags as peak dryness season.
