Allure's editor-tested roundup of retinol creams puts Alastin Skincare Renewal Retinol 0.25 ($81) at the top, with seven picks spanning $68 to $190 and multiple drugstore options. "[Retinol] can help stimulate cell turnover as well as help stimulate collagen production," Ron Robinson, a New York City-based cosmetic chemist and founder of BeautyStat, previously told Allure.

Why Alastin won
The formula pairs 0.25% lipid-encapsulated retinol with ceramides, oat extract, and silver mushroom, which the review notes has hydrating properties rivaling hyaluronic acid. Advanced users can step up to a 0.5% version. "I was able to use this with no acclimation period—gasp!—which is a big deal, since I've experienced the retinol-newbie flakes as an over-confident 20-something," contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai said.
What makes retinal different?
Avène's $68 pick contains 0.1% retinaldehyde, a vitamin A derivative the review says works faster than retinol. "Retinal is one step closer to becoming retinoic acid, which is the active form that binds to receptors in your skin to stimulate collagen production and skin cell turnover," said Asmi Berry, DO, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles. The cream buffers the active with thermal spring water, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, squalane, shea butter, safflower seed oil, niacinamide, and vitamin E.
Which pick suits beginners?
SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 ($102) targets experienced users, with bisabolol and boswellia serrata extract calming irritation; the brand sells 0.3% and 0.5% stepping-stone concentrations. Revision's $190 D·E·J Night Face Cream takes another route: 0.25% time-released retinol plus bakuchiol, peptides, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, ceramides, and cholesterol. "It's faded some of my hyperpigmentation, and while I haven't seen a difference in my fine lines just yet, I'm optimistic," Pai said.
Murad's night cream stacks three retinoids—retinol, retinyl linoleate, and hydroxypinacolone retinoate—against crepey skin. "This is one of my favorite options for patients who want visible improvement in crepey skin texture and firmness," said Alexandra Bowles, MD, of Cincinnati. Dr. Dennis Gross's Intense Wrinkle Cream promises visible improvement in as little as two weeks via a Phyto-Retinol Blend plus bakuchiol, ferulic acid, and rambutan.
How should shoppers use retinol?
Dermatologists in the piece recommend starting once or twice weekly, then building toward nightly use, always with moisturizer and daily broad-spectrum SPF. "Studies have shown that retinol is about 10 times less potent than prescription-strength retinoic acid, so I usually recommend products with at least 0.25% retinol," said David Kim, MD, of New York City. New York dermatologist Hadley King, MD, notes irritation—dryness, peeling, redness—should subside by the fourth week. The review also warns against pairing retinol with benzoyl peroxide, AHAs, or BHAs, and advises day-time vitamin C with night-time retinol.
For sensitive skin, the experts point to bakuchiol, niacinamide, and peptides as gentler alternatives. Olay's drugstore pick, while fragrance-free, does not disclose its retinol percentage—a transparency gap buyers may weigh as retinol labeling scrutiny grows.
