Anne Hathaway debuted a deep burgundy "cherry noir" manicure at the New York premiere of her upcoming film Verity, and the entire look rests on a single drugstore-brand polish: Essie's Model Clicks gel polish.

Celebrity manicurist Mo Quin created the look and tied it directly to the film. "We chose a deep, dark red for Verity to bring a slightly mysterious and dramatic feeling to the nails, tying the look back to the mood of the film and her character," Quin said.

The shade is a moody bordeaux. The shape is short and square, which Quin chose to keep the manicure, in her words, fresh and timeless.

How did Mo Quin create the manicure?

Quin's process ran in four steps:

  • Prepped the nails and shaped them into a square form
  • Applied a base coat from Essie
  • Painted two coats of Essie's Model Clicks gel polish in a rich burgundy shade
  • Sealed the color with a top coat, then added Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil for extra shine

Every product in the routine comes from Essie, which makes the trend inexpensive to reproduce compared with custom salon blends.

Why does this look matter for fall?

Hathaway usually stays neutral on her nails, so a saturated bordeaux counts as a statement for the actress. The timing matters: "quiet luxury" nails are still trending, and burgundy sits alongside brown-forward shades and taupes as a fall color family that reads seasonal without straying from neutral territory.

The premiere look also continues a pattern. Hathaway spent the awards season cycling through wearable nail ideas, starting with "coconut jelly" nails earlier in the year before moving to the darker fall hue.

For nail brands and salons, the takeaway is straightforward: a film-tied, single-polish burgundy manicure with a short square shape gives clients an accessible entry point into fall's darker palette — no custom mixing required.
