Chocolate browns, deep reds, terracotta and khaki are the backbone of the Fall 2026 nail color season, and pearly finishes are bringing light to these deeper shades. That is the assessment of Agathe Massé, resident nail artist at French nail care brand Manucurist, one of two experts ELLE consulted on the season's color direction.
"For fall, colors are getting warmer: chocolate browns, deep reds, terracotta, and khaki are coming back naturally," Massé says. "We are also seeing more pearly finishes, which bring a little light to these deeper shades."
Nail artist Hang Nguyen, known as @thehangedit on Instagram, points to a parallel set of winners. "Espresso brown, deep plum, and deep greens have been popular," she says. Her take on what elevates the familiar autumn palette: "Some subtle chrome sheen gives these familiar autumn shades a new dimension."
The six directions defining the season
Chocolate brown. Deep, glossy and highly wearable, chocolate brown functions as the quiet core of the fall 2026 palette. ELLE compares its appeal to a favorite cashmere sweater: sophisticated, cozy, and proof that the richest statement can also be the quietest one.
Pastel blue. The season's outlier. "Pastel blue is a nice surprise for fall. In a slightly grey-toned shade, it becomes much easier to wear at this time of year," Massé says. She names Bubble as a shade that adds a fresh touch and pairs well with browns, reds and earthy tones.
Deep red. Not the bright red of Valentine's Day or summer manicures, but colder, darker variants: merlot, brick and deep garnet. "My pick would have to be a brick red or ochre/green for favorite fall shades to rock," Nguyen states. The effect reads classic with a touch of glamour.
Almost black. Shades dark enough to read as black at first glance, but with visible depth under warm light—an espresso undertone, or hints of dark berry and red. ELLE frames it as the manicure equivalent of a wardrobe's darkest neutral.
Milky hues. Soft, milky shades continue to hold ground as a comforting, understated option across the season.
Chrome finish. Reflective and futuristic, chrome works layered over deep espresso or plum, adding dimension without breaking the season's moody character.
The so-what
The through-line across both experts' picks is contrast: warm, deep base colors lifted by light-reflecting finishes—pearl and subtle chrome—rather than brightness. For salons and brands, that pairing suggests demand will concentrate in warm dark cremes paired with finishing top coats that add sheen, not shimmer, heading into fall 2026.
