The FDA approved 28 additional sizes of Motiva breast implants on October 5, including options as small as 105 cc. The decision gives U.S. plastic surgeons a wider range for patients seeking subtle volume rather than a dramatic change in size.
The new sizes span both Motiva SmoothSilk Round and SmoothSilk Ergonomix implants. They are expected to reach the U.S. market before the end of 2026. Motiva first received FDA approval in 2024, after years of use in international markets.
Why do smaller sizes matter?
Breast augmentation once leaned toward a noticeably fuller look. Surgeons now report growing demand for implants that complement a patient's existing shape. The pattern tracks a wider conversation about natural-looking results, with patients choosing enhancements proportionate to their frames.
New York plastic surgeon Anna Steve, MD, described the demand in the company's announcement. "Small-volume breast augmentation is a significant part of my practice, and many of my patients want a subtle enhancement that fits their frame rather than a dramatic change in size," she said.
The expanded lineup breaks down as follows:
- 19 new sizes of SmoothSilk Round implants
- 9 new sizes of Ergonomix implants
- Additional options across Mini, Demi and Full profiles
Volume alone does not determine the final result. Width, projection, body proportions and existing breast tissue all shape the outcome, which is why the added profile variety carries practical weight.
What distinguishes the two implant lines?
Surgeons first noticed Motiva's SmoothSilk surface and soft, cohesive gel when the brand entered the U.S. market. The two styles serve different aesthetic goals. SmoothSilk Round maintains a rounder shape. Ergonomix is designed to shift with body position for a more natural-looking contour.
The smaller range also serves revision cases. "With Motiva now available down to 105 cc and with more options in base and projection, I have a complete range to meet those needs," Dr. Steve added.
The approval fits a broader shift in breast surgery toward less invasive approaches, natural proportions and tissue preservation.
Who should consider the new sizes?
Smaller implants will not suit every patient. Size selection still depends on anatomy, skin quality and aesthetic goals, and the source announcement does not claim otherwise. For patients who want a conservative enhancement or an implant swap, the expanded range widens the fit options.
The practical effect lands in 2026: more size combinations for surgeons, and more choices for patients weighing a first augmentation or a revision.
