Selena Gomez wore a $10 drugstore-aisle polish to match a gem-covered couture gown. At this week's Rare Impact Fund Gala, her manicurist Tom Bachik paired her bright scarlet, gem-encrusted Prada dress with an ultra-glossy maroon manicure he named "Bordeaux jelly" in an interview with Cosmopolitan.
The shade is "SC" by Olive & June, which the brand describes as "deep bordeaux." Bachik said the color was chosen to bridge two looks in one night.
"We needed a shade that went with both of her gorgeous Prada gowns for the night, and Sel wanted a bit of color," Bachik said. "We chose a deep Bordeaux jelly red from Olive & June that gives the same depth of color as the stones on her red-carpet gown."
What does this change for fall manicures?
The look lands on two converging trends: jelly finishes (semi-sheer polishes that build translucent depth) and jewel tones. Bachik argued "SC" sits at a rare midpoint on the color spectrum, which is why it flatters so widely.
"This is such a great shade because of its versatility; it's not too warm (orange) or too cool (purple)," he told Cosmopolitan. "It has a brightness to it while the semi-sheer effect gives it depth and dimension. It's the best of both worlds since jelly effects and jewel tones are both trending."
Red is carrying the category right now. Anne Hathaway recently wore "cherry noir" nails, another dark red variation pushing the trend through the cooler months.
How to copy the look for $10
The polish retails for $10 at Olive & June. Bachik's layering method, per the source:
- Start with a grippy base coat to prime the nail plate.
- Apply two coats of "SC" to build the semi-sheer jelly effect.
- Seal with an ultra-shiny top coat to maximize gloss.
The finished manicure reads wine-dark and dimensional rather than flat, and its neutral-cool balance means it pairs with most fall wardrobes. Bachik noted the vibe suits the season — the effect, he implied, goes with a glass of red wine and every cold-weather outfit.
The takeaway for the trade: a celebrity gala look built on a $10 mass-market polish, not a custom blend, signals continued demand for accessible jelly formulas in deep reds — a spec brands and salon buyers should watch as jewel tones dominate the fall season.
