Warm Autumn Makeup: Three Artists on Terracotta, Copper and Deep Olive
Makeup artist Selena Graham advises warm autumn complexions to go complementary: terracotta, copper, warm browns and deep olive, with brown liner replacing black.
Counter notes
- Selena Graham defines warm autumn makeup as complementary: terracotta, copper, sunflower yellow, warm browns and deep olives.
- Alexa Persico recommends a deep brown eyeliner instead of harsh black to keep warmth and softness.
- Robin Schoen advises golden or yellow undertone foundation matched to the neck and chest.
- Graham warns against locking into color analysis to the exclusion of shades outside your color wheel.

Color analysis has a name for the season's richest complexions — "warm autumn" — and makeup artist Selena Graham says the strategy is simple: lean "complementary." That means terracotta, copper, sunflower yellow, warm browns and deep olives, applied with restraint rather than heavy-handed warmth.
Between spring's soft pastels and winter's frosty hues, most people have seasonal shades that suit them best — crisp apple, pumpkin spice and caramel espresso among them. Swapping a wardrobe for moody autumnal sweaters is easy. Reworking a makeup routine around those tones is harder, which is where three working artists offer concrete guidance.
What does a warm autumn eye look like?
Graham starts by reframing what "pop" means for a warm profile. "When I think of makeup designed around 'warm autumn,' I'm thinking about how we make it pop," she said. "A wash of taupe across the eyelid, a muted blush and a lip topped with a neutralizing gloss sounds daunting when your color profile is so warm, but you may find that it accentuates your features in an unexpected way."
Alexa Persico, founder of her eponymous makeup line, builds dimension on the lid with bronze, chocolate brown and olive shades. Her liner choice replaces black entirely. "I love using a deep brown eyeliner instead of a harsh black because it defines the eyes while maintaining softness and warmth," she said.
Her broader principle: enhance the natural warmth of the complexion rather than compete with it. "The key is don't confuse warmth with heavy makeup. You can embrace rich autumn colors while still keeping your complexion fresh, luminous and youthful," Persico said.
How should the complexion be built?
Celebrity makeup expert Robin Schoen anchors the base in a foundation with golden or yellow undertones. The test is physical, not theoretical. "You have found the right shade when the color of your face blends seamlessly with your neck and chest, ensuring they all tell the same cohesive color story," Schoen said.
Her routine has three steps:
- Spot conceal with a creamy, yellow-based formula.
- Touch the apples of the cheeks with the same shade of bronze used on the eyelids.
- Layer that bronze under a fresh peach or tangerine blush.
Schoen finishes the skin with "a light dusting of translucent powder around the T-zone to set the makeup and remove excess shine." The lip that closes the look should sit in the coral, peach or cinnamon family and "leave a lasting impression."
Are there rules to follow?
One — and it is the absence of rules. Graham frames color analysis as a starting point, not a constraint. "Color analysis can be a very helpful tool when you genuinely don't know where to start, but don't get completely locked in to the point where you feel like you can't try something outside of your color wheel," she said.
For readers who want the look without an analyst's appointment, the artists' combined instructions reduce to a checklist: brown liner over black, golden-undertone foundation matched to the neck, bronze on both lids and cheeks, peach or tangerine layered on top, and a coral, peach or cinnamon lip. The takeaway for the season: warmth works best as an accent system, not a full-face commitment — and the palette is a suggestion, not a verdict.
