Seven shades define the winter 2026 pedicure: multichrome black, oxblood, champagne shimmer, deep sapphire, espresso, plum, and a surprise entry, sheer ballet pink. Nail artists across New York, Los Angeles, Tucson, and Beverly Hills name the specific polishes and the skin tones each shade flatters.
What replaces classic red this winter? Oxblood, with bite. "It gives drama without being costume-y," says Tucson-based nail artist Max Estrada, founder of eNailCouture. Undertone decides the shade. Blue-based burgundies like Holo Taco Devils Advocate and Nails Inc It's Topless "tends to work well with cool undertones," says Sandra Wei, a New York City nail artist and founder of Peach Bling. Warmer oxbloods like Chanel Rouge Noir or Lippmann Single Ladies "are especially flattering on warm and olive undertones."
Why is black suddenly a pedicure color? Because it shifts. "I love a color that you can't immediately figure out," says New York City nail artist Elle Gerstein. "That blackened, moody base with a shift that changes depending on the light—that's exactly where I think winter pedicures are going." For prismatic shimmer, she and the report point to China Glaze Shadow Banned and Cirque Colors Alter Ego. Triochrome options include ILNP Orbit, a gunmetal black that meets orange and red, and Londontown Lakur Skyline Reflect in black-blue-purple.
Which party shade works for every skin tone? Champagne shimmer. "An icy pearl works especially well on fair or cool skin, while champagne and warmer beige pearl tones are beautiful on warm, olive, and deeper skin tones," says Vikki Swan, a Los Angeles nail artist and founder of Vikki Swan Nail Academy. "Metallics and shimmer continue to accompany eveningwear and accessories, so this is a very wearable way to bring that fashion texture into the pedicure," Estrada says. Product picks: OPI Candied Cutie for icy pearl, Le Mini Macaron Satin Pearl for beige-gold metallic, and ORLY Let's Get Fizzicle or Dazzle Dry Wink Wink for pink champagne.
How dark should blue and brown go? Very. "A deep navy or blue-black with a glossy lacquered finish," Estrada says of sapphire. "Think sapphire at midnight, not bright cobalt." He adds that "deep blue works naturally with denim, navy tailoring, silver hardware, and the cool-toned evening palette often seen in New York and Paris. It reads graphic in daylight and is almost black at night." Creamy picks: Cracked Crowfriend and Habit Deep Sea. Shimmer: Apres Milky Way Galaxy and CND Midnight Swim.
Espresso follows the same logic. "Warm chocolate browns look especially beautiful on warm- and olive-toned skin, while cooler cocoa or espresso shades work well with cool undertones," says Viktoriia Voloshyna, a Beverly Hills nail artist and founder of Tory Pro Nails Studio. Butter London Boozy Chocolate is a warm chestnut; Sally Hansen Been There, Dune That is true milk chocolate; Kiara Sky Barely Made It is a cooler cocoa; Townhouse Hot Chocolate adds cream.
What is the unexpected shade of the season? Ballet pink, oddly enough. "This is actually one of my favorite directions for winter 2026 because a sheer ballet pink can feel more unexpected right now than another (red) pedicure," Gerstein says. MiniLuxe Prima Donna and Nailberry Candy Floss stay classic; Gucci Ellen Blush goes apricot; Essie Frost Yourself adds iridescence.
Plum rounds out the list. Swan expects clients to request it this winter: "[It's] very seasonal, but fits the current shift toward more polished, sophisticated nail looks." Options span a spectrum: Olive and June Plum muted, Zoya Tara brighter, Clinique Black Honey and Hermes Violet by Zantin rich and velvety. The verdict: this winter rewards depth over brightness, and one sheer pink disrupts the whole palette.
