Innisfree's $18 Daily Defense UV Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++ takes Best Chemical Overall in Allure's 2026 roundup of glowy sunscreens. Ranavat's $65 Daily Brightening Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 50+ tops the mineral category. The full list spans chemical and mineral formulas priced from $18 to $65, targeting dry skin, oily skin, discoloration and reapplication.

The selection matters because radiant-finish SPF has fragmented into distinct technologies. "Optical pigments, such as mica and synthetic fluorphlogopite, which reflect light upon light application," deliver an instant glow, said Karan Lal, DO, an Arizona-based dermatologist. Other formulas rely on emollients — glycerin, ceramides and squalane — that strengthen the skin barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss (moisture escaping through the skin).

The testers' verdicts

Commerce writer Tasha Nicole Smith called Innisfree a years-long staple. "It wears a lot like a moisturizer, and I'll never say no to an extra boost of hydration," she said. Contributing commerce writer Christa Joanna Lee confirmed the reformulated version — now SPF 50, up from the original SPF 36 — "blends in without a trace of white cast." The formula uses avobenzone 2.5%, homosalate 7% and octisalate 4.3%, plus cica, green tea and sunflower oil.

Commerce editor Sarah Han, a self-described mineral-skeptic, said Ranavat raised her standards: "I'm not used to mineral sunscreens leaving a dewy finish, and now my standards have been raised." The formula carries 12.3% zinc oxide with saffron for brightening and squalane for moisture.

La Roche-Posay's Anthelios UVAir pairs patented Cell-Ox B3 Shield Technology with Senna Alata leaf extract, niacinamide and thermal spring water. "Even better: While some acne-friendly sunscreens leave my skin looking flat, this gave me a dewy—but not too shiny—glow," said contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai.

Then I Met You's Essence Light Sunscreen layers fermented sake with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and provitamin B5. One tester flagged mild stinging around the eyes. Saie Sunvisor, with 15% zinc oxide and encapsulated vitamin C, blends transparently when warmed between fingers, per the brand's instructions.

Supergoop Glowscreen, a 2020 Best of Beauty winner, comes in four finishes — Sunrise, Pink Pearl, Bronze and Deep Bronze — plus body, serum-drop and stick iterations.

What the dermatologists say

Mona Gohara, MD, a Connecticut-based dermatologist, explained Eucerin's dual function: "It contains Thiamidol to help visibly reduce dark spots over time, alongside broad-spectrum sunscreen to help prevent their reappearance when used as directed." She noted Neutrogena's glow comes from "micro-peptides and antioxidants that help defend against sun-induced collagen loss and support smoother-looking skin" — peptides two times smaller than traditional ones, reaching up to 10 surface layers deeper.

Glow does not equal hydration, Dr. Gohara cautioned. "Think of shimmer as the statement earring; hydration is the comfortable outfit doing the heavy lifting," she said. California-based cosmetic chemist Amanda Lam identified the two glow mechanisms: effect pigments that add shimmer or tint, and emollients with high refractive indexes that create a "glazed" appearance.

Allure's methodology covered five categories: ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture and wear, with every product tested by editors and vetted by dermatologists and cosmetic chemists. Shoppers who read ingredient lists — glycerin, hyaluronic acid, squalane, mica — rather than chasing shimmer alone will get both radiance and real moisture.
