Amal Clooney debuted a new "cedarwood" brunette hair color on the red carpet at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival last night. Celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos created the dimensional, warm-chocolate shade laced with ribbons of soft golden hues, paired with a black tailored Tom Ford gown.
The look marks Clooney's transition from late-summer brightness into a deeper autumn brunette — one the high-shine color she is known for makes an easy case for.
What did the stylist actually do?
"Amal wore a beautiful black tailored Tom Ford gown, so I wanted to keep her glam soft and ethereal," Giannetos told Bazaar UK. "For her hair, I created the autumn 'blurred brown' hair color—a rich, dimensional shade that subtly covers summer highlights while allowing them to peek through as soft, see-through highlights without looking washed out."
The "cedarwood" name comes from the wood's rippled texture. Lowlights and highlights are woven throughout the hair, creating a sun-kissed effect that yesterday's soft waves amplified. The shade retains subtle residual warmth from Clooney's summer highlights.
"To achieve this look, I used L'Oréal Paris Préférence and finished with tousled, brushed-through curls," Giannetos said.
How to recreate the shade in a salon?
Bazaar UK recommends asking for:
- a warm, medium brunette base;
- strategically placed babylights around the front of the face;
- a face-framing placement for a dynamic, glossy finish.
Maintenance matters as much as formulation. Regular hair masks, glossing treatments and trims keep the color looking full, healthy and reflective, according to the report.
What about the makeup?
Giannetos paired the new hair color with a blurred pink-brown lip and cheek. "I finished the makeup with Charlotte Tilbury's new Airbrush Loose Powder on the T-zone, along with a touch of powder over the lipstick to create more of a stained effect," he said.
With "blurred brown" positioning itself as the bridge between summer highlights and cool-weather brunette, expect dimensional, low-contrast shading requests — and box-dye searches for L'Oréal Paris Préférence — to build through autumn.
