Chappell Roan debuted pin-straight crimson red hair with chunky strawberry-blonde highlights at the National PrEP Day gathering at the Abbey in Los Angeles, abandoning her trademark curls for a look straight out of the early- to mid-2000s.

Hairstylist Virginie Pineda crafted the style, which echoes the chunky-highlight aesthetic that dominated the era of MTV's TRL — the music video countdown show millennials rushed home to watch after school. Roan attended the event alongside fellow musicians Christina Aguilera and Tinashe.

What did the look include?

  • A vivid crimson red base, straightened rather than worn in Roan's usual curls
  • Chunky strawberry-blonde highlights placed throughout the red base
  • Choppy baby bangs ending about an inch above her skinny, sculpted brows

The baby bang is also having a moment, with celebrity co-signs including Florence Pugh.

Makeup artist Dee did Roan's makeup: a colorful mix of cerulean blue, daffodil yellow and orchid pink, with a brighter pink applied high on her cheekbones and buffed out to her temples.

Are chunky highlights coming back?

The look fits a broader shift. This year has brought a subtle return to chunkier, higher-contrast highlights, with Jennifer Lopez and Gabrielle Union among the stars experimenting with the style. Roan's version channels the straight-haired celebrities of the 2000s like Aguilera and Avril Lavigne — looks many fans spent hours recreating with bulky flat irons.

Roan took DJ duty at the party for the first time. "I did literally nothing but vibe and b [sic] cute," she wrote on Instagram.

With Roan, Lopez and Union all leaning into higher-contrast color in a single year, chunky highlights look poised to move from niche nostalgia toward a mainstream salon request.
