Dakota Johnson broke from her signature long, loose, bang-anchored style at the New York premiere of Verity on September 29—and she helped build the replacement herself.

The actress arrived in a white Calvin Klein Collection two-piece: a shimmering bralette-style top and a high-slit column skirt covered in sparkling beads. Stylist Kate Young paired the look with a diamond necklace and earrings. The overall effect reads as an opulent, sophisticated, 2026 take on Y2K.

Hairstylist Mark Townsend wanted the hair to feel as shiny as the outfit while departing from Johnson's usual straightforward style.

"We used to do a lot of half-up hairstyles, and I felt half-up would be perfect for her Calvin Klein look," he tells Allure. "It was Dakota's idea to not do a full half-up by leaving quite a bit of hair down on the sides."

The result is what Townsend calls a "quarter-up hairdo."

The process started with a blow-dry using a medium round brush to build fullness. Townsend then applied IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray to fight frizz while running a curling iron over three-inch sections. He brushed IGK Good Behavior Flexible Anti-Frizz Hairspray through the hair on a flat brush before gathering it up, leaving some of Johnson's new face-framing layers out and down.

The chignon itself was a joint effort. Townsend shared a behind-the-scenes look at his point of view while styling Johnson's hair on social media.

"I love doing hairstyles like this with Dakota. She will pull her hair on top of her head into a cool shape, and I will secure it with Day Rate Beauty Foundation Pins while she's still holding it up," he says. "It's a team collaboration."

The style serves two purposes. It keeps just enough hair off her face to draw attention to her red lip, and it functions as a work of hair art—one the famous wearer shaped with her own hands.

The premiere look marks a rare deviation for Johnson, who has worn her hair long, loose, smooth and bang-anchored at virtually every recent appearance, from Milan Fashion Week to the MTV VMAs to the Valentino Vendetta fragrance launch party. A collaboratively styled, named hybrid like the "quarter-up" could give the actress a second signature look heading into the Verity press cycle.
