Dove sells an estimated 60 bars of its Beauty Bar soap per second in the U.S. — nearly 1.9 billion bars per year — and now the Unilever-owned brand has bottled that soap's scent as its first-ever fine fragrance.

The product is almost 70 years old. Its cloudy, creamy, freshly lathered scent is what the brand is betting on: Dove said in a press release that the fragrance is a response to growing demand from its loyalists. This is the brand's first move into the perfume category.

The bottle echoes the soap itself, with a familiar oblong shape and a gold cap fashioned after Dove's logo. The price carries its own signal: $19.57 is not just an accessibility play, it is a nod to the brand's debut year, 1957. The fragrance debuts next week as a one-time-only purchase available on social media.

To build it, Dove worked with Ann Gottlieb, a veteran fragrance developer whose collaborations span Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Vaseline and Victoria's Secret. Four Allure staffers tested the result. Their verdicts split.

What does it actually smell like?

Sophia Panych, Content Director at Allure, confirmed fidelity to the original. "If you smell the juice in the bottle or on a blotter, it's an exact match to the original Dove Beauty Bar," she said. "On my skin, at least, it takes a few minutes to settle into the classic creamy, soapy scent, with some floral notes and even a tinge of bubblegum that emerge, although they disappear pretty quickly." She compares her taste to Byredo Mojave Ghost and Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis, and would reach for the Dove scent only on weekends when she wants to feel fresh and cozy.

James Manso, Senior News Editor, placed the soap in his family's scent lineage. "I think of it the way I think of my grandmother wearing Clinique Happy or my mother with Mugler Angel," he said. "I was floored by how identical that smell is to the one bottled for this fragrance." He noted the fragrance avoids the sharp, surfactant-heavy whiff of dishsoap, but as someone who prefers "moodier and dirtier ouds, woods and herbs," he is not the target buyer.

Elizabeth Gulino, Senior Staff Writer, described herself as brand loyal to an extreme. "I have, with no exaggeration, been using the Dove Beauty Bar for the entirety of my life," she said. She called the perfume "a floral, powdery concoction that brings me right back to my childhood bathtub," though she would likely layer it rather than wear it alone.

Giancarlos Kunhardt, Associate Visuals Editor, gave the most enthusiastic verdict: "Now, Dove Beauty Bar in perfume form? I'm sold."

What does this change for the category?

The launch shows how mass personal-care brands can convert decades of olfactory familiarity into a fine-fragrance entry, provided the scent match is credible — and by the testers' accounts, this one is nearly exact. The one-time-only social media drop next week at $19.57 will test whether nostalgia converts into sales at speed.
