Glossy coffee-bean brown has displaced the sugary pastels of summer, and the trend has a name: espresso martini nails. ELLE has declared the look "the manicure of the moment," and the description is precise. The palette runs to deep roasted browns, warm mocha, soft latte beige and a touch of champagne shimmer. The surface, per the magazine, is "velvety and dark, equal parts indulgent and effortlessly chic."

The trend borrows the cocktail's visual vocabulary wholesale. Finishes include a mirror-gloss chocolate effect, a marbled swirl that mimics cream melting into coffee, and a chrome sheen that, in ELLE's words, "glows like liquid espresso." The look, the magazine argues, "feels expensive without trying too hard."

That claim is doing a lot of work. But the trend's real selling point is its range. It flatters every skin tone, suits short squoval nails and long almond shapes alike, and pairs with a cashmere sweater as readily as a little black dress. Few manicure trends survive the transition from morning coffee to, fittingly, a Friday-night bar.

What does the trend actually look like?

ELLE has assembled eight variations on the theme. The list is a useful map of where mocha-brown manicures are heading:

  • Chrome espresso. A glazed chrome finish on an elongated oval shape, described as "rich" and "effortlessly sophisticated."
  • Swirly mocha. An artsy marbled effect that mimics cream swirling into coffee, paired with dedicated espresso martini nail art.
  • Deep espresso. Long pointed nails in a dark espresso brown, cut to what ELLE calls a "sleek, moody silhouette."
  • Espresso martini French tips. A café-inspired French manicure combining cream, caramel, mocha and deep espresso, finished with a hint of gold shimmer.
  • An artist's order. A chocolaty mocha brown set built for depth and dimension, aimed at those who would "take the road less traveled" on the trend.
  • Latte on the rocks. A soft ombré that melts a barely-there pink into a milky latte shade — the gentlest entry point.
  • Coffee bean art. Nearly literal. Coffee bean designs sit on top of a swirly marbled base, turning the drink into "wearable art."
  • Solid espresso. The timeless fallback. One shade, no decoration, no fuss.

Is this a trend or a wardrobe staple?

The eight interpretations span two extremes: full embellishment and a single flat brown. That spread suggests the trend has matured past the novelty stage. A look that can survive translation into a plain solid shade has a longer shelf life than one dependent on intricate art.

ELLE notes that its recommendations are independently researched, tested or editor-approved, and that content created with advertisers is labeled as such. No specific polish brands, prices or product names appear in the piece — this is a color-direction story, not a shopping list.

For salon owners and nail artists, the signal is straightforward. Mocha, caramel and latte beige are the browns to stock for autumn, and chrome and marble are the finishes clients will ask for by name. The pastel cycle has closed. The coffee cycle is open, and it travels from morning to midnight without a repaint.
