The takeaway

  • Circana: US household air freshener sales flat at $4,294,211,885 (+0.2%) with units down 3.2%; candles flat at $2,472,178,381 (+0.1%) with units down 1.3%, for the 52 weeks ended June 14, 2026.

  • Crush! launched biodegradable 17" x 22" fragrance mats made from Simplifyber's bio-based material; Simplifyber has raised $20 million.

US household air freshener sales held at $4.3 billion for the 52 weeks ended June 14, 2026, while candle sales stayed at $2.5 billion — but unit volumes fell in both categories, according to Circana data for total US multi-outlet retail (supermarkets, drugstores, mass market retailers, military commissaries and select club and dollar retail chains).

Household air freshener dollars inched up 0.2% to $4,294,211,885 on unit sales of 800,988,486, down 3.2%. Average price per unit rose 3.5% to $5.36. Candles fared similarly: dollars up 0.1% to $2,472,178,381, units down 1.3% to 554,733,742, and price per unit up 1.4% to $4.46.

The subcategories diverged sharply. Home air fresheners/odor controllers grew 5.7% in dollars to $1,836,616,251, with units up 1.4%. Home electronic fragrance dispensers slipped 2.4% to $1,970,711,678 on a 7.0% unit decline. Potpourri/sachets fell 7.3% to $394,962,562. Home essential oils dropped 13.2% to $91,921,394, with price per unit down 11.8% to $5.04.

Variety as Strategy at Febreze

Arianna Castro, scientific communications manager and home care scientist at Febreze, P&G, told Happi that today's home fragrance shoppers want products that make their homes feel "fresh, welcoming and uniquely theirs."

"Because scent is closely tied to memory, emotion and personal experience, preferences are highly personal, which is why variety matters," she said. "With more than 30 scents available, Febreze gives consumers options to find the fragrance experience that best fits their home, mood and personal style."

Castro said some consumers stick to one signature scent, while others rotate by season or layer different scents across rooms. She also stressed odor control over masking: "When fragrance is simply added on top of smells, the result can feel muddled. Febreze helps address this by combining inviting fragrances with long-lasting odor-fighting technology."

Delivery formats are changing too. Indie brand Crush! launched 17" x 22" fragrance-release mats for car floors (passenger side only), dorm rooms, bathrooms and gyms, releasing scent on contact. The mats use 100% bio-based, fully biodegradable material from Simplifyber, a North Carolina advanced materials company that has raised $20 million to commercialize its liquid fiber molding platform. Designs — lucky cat, rubber duck, luchador mask — each carry a matching scent such as orange creamsicle, strawberry cheesecake and pink watermelon lemonade.

Luxury and Celebrity Halo

Flamingo Estate scored a high-profile placement: Taylor Swift's wedding planner gifted Swift and Travis Kelce the brand's Ultimate Flamingo Set, priced at $1,500. The set contains 30 petite hand-poured candles in an embossed box, each personalized by hand.

Fall 2026 Launches

Febreze's Cozy Campfire — amber, patchouli and pine — previously a Walmart exclusive, expands to other national retailers this fall.

Tracie Marzano, fragrance expert and manager of product development at Bath & Body Works, told Happi: "We know consumers crave fragrances that are transportive, connecting back to their favorite seasonal moments like apple picking or pumpkin carving. They're looking for fragrances with iconic fall notes like crisp apples, pumpkin, warm spices and rich gourmand scents. Some of our most-loved fragrances, like Leaves and Pumpkin Pecan Waffles, are returning for Fall 2026."

The Bath & Body Works Fall 2026 line includes Pumpkin Apple, Sweater Weather, Marshmallow Fireside and Fall Farmhouse, plus gourmand releases Pumpkin & Salted Toffee, Cranberry Pumpkin Nutmeg and Toasted Graham Latte. White Barn candles recently expanded into Ulta Beauty.

Erwan Le Berrigaud, chief marketing officer of Nest New York, told Happi that tropical notes will persist beyond summer, "layered with floral, woods, vanilla and amber accords, using different fragrance formats to create customized scents that feel seasonal." He noted the boundary between home and fine fragrance is dissolving as consumers coordinate room scents with personal fragrance. Nest's new Cardamom Latte collection — cardamom, jasmine petals, coconut milk and vanilla cream — was created by master perfumer Honorine Blanc.

At Neom, Louise Moore, who leads product development, regulatory and sustainability, sees wellness driving the season: "This fall, we will see scent notes that actively help to destress as consumers demand genuine wellness benefits from their home fragrance — less gourmand pumpkin and more grounding woods and spices layered with floral botanicals." The Neom Real Luxury collection features lavender, jasmine and sandalwood; the limited edition Cosy Nights pairs sandalwood, frankincense and nutmeg.

Wayfair enters with the Perfect Weekend candle, featuring green grass and fresh laundry notes, made by Scent Marketing Inc. and Scentfluence. CEO Caroline Fabrigas told Happi that "fresh, nature-inspired notes and 'clean home' scents" remain among the strongest fall 2026 trends.

2027 Outlook

Castro said Febreze's upcoming innovation will pair multiple scent territories — floral with fruity, woody with floral, aromatic with aquatic. Febreze Ocean, blending waterlily, ginger and hinoki, exemplifies the direction. Marzano expects comfort and nostalgia to persist, with elevated spices like saffron and butternut squash moving mainstream next fall. With dollars flat and units declining, the industry's growth case now rests on premiumization and layered, fine-fragrance-style complexity rather than volume.
