Burgundy and deep mauve lip shades have displaced the classic red lip as the defining makeup story of Paris Fashion Week street style this season.
Marie Claire Beauty Director Hannah Baxter, reporting directly from Paris as fashion month closes, identifies moody burgundies and deep mauves as the colors "taking center stage" on and off the runways. "The classic red lip has received a welcome twist this season," Baxter writes.
The runways themselves supplied the headline glam moments. Dior's S/S '27 show featured glitter eye details created by makeup artist Peter Philips. Saint Laurent sent out sultry smokey eyes, courtesy of Dame Pat McGrath. Baxter reports "no shortage of notable makeup and hair looks to swoon over" across the shows.
But the street proved the stronger trend barometer. Walking Le Marais, the banks of the Seine and the Champs-Élysées, Baxter observed beauty choices that diverged sharply from those dominating other fashion capitals.
Hair tells the clearest story. Chin-length bobs "abound" in Paris, according to Baxter, despite the longer lengths currently popular in both New York and London. Vibrant shades of red have become one of the season's hottest hair color trends.
The street style gallery Baxter compiled from the City of Light documents the range. Look names include Burgundy 'N Bows, Go for Bold, Chopped Copper, Braided Crown, Bobbed Brunette, Platinum Pixie, Oversized Braids, Crimson Claws, Cinnamon Curls, Claw It Back, Midnight Crop, Pinky Dreams, Bang Up Job, Matchy Matchy, C'est Chignon, Soft Volume, A la Almond, Pony, Please, and Marvelous Maroon.
The list reads as a shorthand for the season's key directions: copper and maroon hair color, braided and crowned updos, claw clips as a styling tool, chignons, and almond-shaped nails as the dominant manicure silhouette.
Baxter's reporting carries the weight of her role. Marie Claire, marking more than 30 years as an internationally recognized destination for fashion and beauty coverage, states that every featured product comes personally recommended by a writer, editor or expert the title has spoken to firsthand. Baxter previously held roles at The Zoe Report, Coveteur and Bust Magazine, and her writing has appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Allure, The Cut, Elle, InStyle, Glamour, Air Mail, Vogue, Architectural Digest, Byrdie and Nylon. She authors the Marie Claire newsletter Face Forward.
For beauty buyers and brand strategists, the takeaway is directional rather than speculative: with Paris anchoring fashion month, the shift from bright red to burgundy and mauve lips, paired with short cuts and red-toned hair color, sets the palette that product development and merchandising will chase through the coming season.
