Kim Kardashian's new 340-page biography never once addresses plastic surgery speculation — the omission sits at the center of 'Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future,' published by journalist Jonathan Van Meter after five years of interviews with Kardashian, friends, family, business partners and ex-boyfriends.

Van Meter explained the gap in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I didn't write about this because it became so weird and complicated, but Kim has never had invasive plastic surgery. Her butt and boobs and nose — those are all her own," he said. Kardashian's own record is narrower: during her 2022 Allure cover interview, she admitted to Botox injections and nothing else.

What does the book cover instead?

The biography documents her short-lived ecstasy phase, the Paris robbery, her first relationship with TJ Jackson — Michael Jackson's nephew — the dissolution of her three marriages, her mother's affair, the O.J. Simpson trial and the so-called "Kardashian Curse." Beauty appears only as flattery. A 1991 nanny journal entry reads: "Even as a ten-year-old child, she is stunning." Her late father, Robert Kardashian, warned her in a letter not to let men take advantage of her because she's "got a curvy body and people are going to think you're older than you are."

How does Van Meter explain the avoidance?

Asked how Kardashian deals with the contradiction that her family expanded beauty standards while making them unattainable, Van Meter said: "I'm not sure she does. She doesn't dwell on it." On page 123, he compares her to Andy Warhol, "another enigmatic figure who obsessively documented his life but was not comfortable discussing its meaning." The book never reconciles the paradox.

Why does the omission matter commercially?

The family built its fortune on the body question. The 2007 premiere of 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' opens with Kris Jenner commenting on the size of Kim's backside. In 2011, an entire episode documented Kardashian getting an X-ray of her butt to prove it contained no silicone implants — though an X-ray cannot detect fat transfers or fat grafting, the techniques used in Brazilian Butt Lifts. Across 28 seasons on E! and Hulu's 'The Kardashians,' the sisters sold waist trainers, detox teas, supplements and shapewear. The $630, nine-step SKKN by Kim routine depends on the premise that the look is attainable.

Yet transparency has not hurt sales. Kylie Jenner admitted to lip filler in 2015, dissolved much of it on the show in 2024, and still sold 51 percent of Kylie Cosmetics to Coty in 2019 for a reported $600 million. In 2023, Kylie revealed her first breast augmentation at age 19; two years later she posted the exact surgical details — 445 cc, moderate profile, half under the muscle — and the surgeon's name in a TikTok comment. Khloé Kardashian confirmed "one nose job" in 2021 and repeated it in a recent Instagram comment. Kris Jenner's recent facelift drew widespread coverage.

Do the sisters grasp their own influence?

The closest they came: a season-three conversation on 'The Kardashians,' when Kylie asked Khloé and Kourtney: "I just think we have huge influence. And what are we doing with our power?" The discussion centered on how beauty standards affected them, not on how they shaped those standards. A 2022 York University study in Toronto found that women shown images of "slim-thick" bodies — with Kim and Kylie cited as examples — reported more body dissatisfaction than women shown other body types.

Kris Jenner's 2011 memoir, 'Kris Jenner… and All Things Kardashian,' describes her first breast augmentation in 1988, the year Kim turned 8, and her wish for "those high, perky, fabulous boobs that you see on Playboy bunnies."

What stands out about 'Citizen Kim' is not denial but silence — and the questions it declines to answer are the same ones the public has asked Kardashian for nearly two decades.
