Interest in "olive green nails" is up 50.3% year-over-year, according to trend-forecasting company Spate, and searches for "olive nails" climbed 19.7% across Google, TikTok, and Instagram. The martini-garnish manicure has returned, whether as a solid coat of deep, slightly yellow-green polish or as nail art detailed enough to stir an extra-dirty drink.
The trend has celebrity and runway credentials. Meagan Good wore a solid olive-green manicure; Lili Reinhart wore a version with chrome embellishments and 3D olives, a nod to her character in the film The Love Hypothesis. Bottega Veneta, Valentino, and Ferragamo all put the color in their fall/winter 2026 collections. Selena Gomez wore the solid olive manicure back in 2022.
Why olive, and why now?
The experts behind this season's fall nail trend reports called the return in advance. "It's a warm autumn color we naturally gravitate toward as the weather gets cooler," Andrea Forero, a Barcelona-based manicurist, previously told Allure.
Miss Pop, a New York City nail artist, frames it as party logistics. "We're going into holiday party season. Why not have martini nails?!"
Los Angeles nail artist Bana Jajour credits the vibe: the feeling of sitting in the back of a candlelit bar, toasting with a best friend. "You picture a girl with oval nails and olive color," says Jajour. "She's holding her martini glass, posing cute, and posting her pictures." It is, in short, a photogenic cold-weather accessory.
How to get olive nails at home
Shape comes first. Experts unanimously favor an oval for this trend, though Sarah Chue, a Los Angeles manicurist, notes that the depth of olive polish also flatters square or stiletto nails.
The simplest route is one solid coat. Jajour keeps six olive polishes in her kit and advises matching the shade to your skin's undertone, which keeps skin from looking flat and tired. Her picks:
- Light to medium complexions, cool undertones: The GelBottle Inc. in Khaki
- Warm undertones: Gel by Essie in Totally Plaid
- Deeper complexions, cool undertones: OPI Nail Lacquer in Suzi First Lady of Nails
- Deeper complexions, warm undertones: The GelBottle in Mini Bar
For a low-effort design, the motif pairs well with cat-eye nails and French manicures. A lone red rhinestone atop solid olive polish works as a single accent. Miss Pop recommends a rhinestone-friendly adhesive and topcoat — the Vettsy 5-1 Top Coat — to prolong the manicure's life.
Can you hand-paint the olive?
Yes, with patience and the right tools. Miss Pop's method for the garnish:
- Keep nail-dotting tools or bobby pins on hand.
- Apply a dark green dot gently to form the olive's base.
- Place a smaller dot of opaque white polish, such as OPI Nail Lacquer in Alpine Snow, where the pimento will go. This step keeps the pimento from looking muddy against the green.
- Layer an orangey-red polish, such as Essie Nail Polish in Geranium, on top.
Allow each layer to dry for about 10 minutes between coats, and go easy on pressure with the dotting tools. Dents, Miss Pop warns, come out donut-shaped.
With Spate's numbers climbing and three luxury houses behind it, olive looks less like a seasonal whim than a color with a full winter booked.
