Counter notes
- Olivia Colman swapped her pixie cut for long salt-and-pepper curls on the Wicker press tour.
- Stylist Clayton Hawkins used a 0.5-inch curling iron, Amika Frizz Me Not treatment and Sexy Hair Powder Play Lite powder.
- Hair was diffused with the L'Oréal Airlight Pro dryer.
- For silver hair, Hawkins recommends purple shampoo plus SPF, naming Dove UV Repair & Glow UV Defense Serum and Coola Scalp & Hair Mist Sunscreen.
- Wicker, co-starring Alexander Skarsgård, opens in theaters on October 23.

Olivia Colman has abandoned her signature pixie for long, salt-and-pepper curls on the Wicker press run, and the routine behind them costs less guesswork than you'd think. Her hairstylist, Clayton Hawkins, shared the full product list with Allure. Styling the actor, he says, is "a dream."
Hawkins has worked with Colman throughout the tour for Wicker, a romance in which her lonely character's wicker husband, played by Alexander Skarsgård, comes to life. The film arrives in theaters on October 23. The premise set the hair direction: "big, sexy romantic curls," in Hawkins's words.
What went into the curls?
Colman's natural texture did most of the lifting. "She has gorgeous natural curls that I played up this week," Hawkins said. The build, step by step:
- Amika Frizz Me Not Hydrating Anti-Fruzz Treatment — wait, Anti-Frizz Treatment — as prep
- Diffusing with the L'Oréal Airlight Pro hair dryer
- A 0.5-inch curling iron, wrapping hair in random sections for what Hawkins called "wild and sexy" curls
- Sexy Hair Powder Play Lite Soft Volumizing & Texturizing Powder at the roots
- Teasing and raking with a wide-tooth comb for added volume
The randomness matters. Random wrapping keeps the pattern from reading as a curling-iron uniformity, which is the tell of an overworked head of hair.
What about the silver?
Hawkins, who has silver hair himself, had firm views on the "quiet silver" trend. "If you take care of gray hair and keep it silvery, there's nothing better, in my opinion," he said.
His maintenance kit for gray, white and blonde hair:
- Purple shampoo, the category standard
- SPF to fight brassiness — specifically Dove UV Repair & Glow UV Defense Serum, a brand he works with often
- An alternative: Coola Scalp & Hair Mist Sunscreen, which protects both scalp and color
Does the film keep the curls?
Yes, at a shorter length. Skarsgård's wicker husband, for the record, sports romance-novel-cover blonde hair and facial hair. Hawkins has seen enough to have formed a verdict: "[Colman] is hilarious and beautiful and a joy to be around and I can't WAIT to see this sexy, bonkers movie."
The look is a useful signal for anyone growing out gray this season. It pairs intentional silver with defined, unfussy texture, and it relies on three products rather than ten. Expect the diffusion-plus-powre routine — the diffusion-plus-powder routine — to circulate widely once the film lands on October 23.
