Beauty sales on TikTok Live reached $769.6 million in the 12 months ending September 2026, up roughly 59 percent year over year, according to data firm Charm.io. That figure represents about 12 percent of the $4 billion in total gross merchandise volume (the value of goods sold) the firm estimates TikTok Live generated during the period.
TikTok Shop U.S. reports that TikTok Live GMV across all categories doubled year over year in the first half of 2026. The platform's biggest beauty moment came on Oct. 6, when Rihanna hosted Fenty Beauty's first 12-hour TikTok Shop Mega Live. The event drew more than 53 million impressions, 10.9 million likes and 1 million unique viewers, according to the brand.
"Beauty and fashion are categories where, 'show me how this looks', 'how did you do that,' or 'what fragrances layer well together' — those have always been good fits for live, but now, finally, the brand appetite, platform capability, and the quality of the host talent has caught up," said Ajay Salpekar, head of beauty, food and beverage at TikTok Shop.
What does this change for beauty brands?
Live commerce is a proven model abroad. Statista reports China's livestreaming e-commerce market hit nearly 6.95 trillion yuan in 2025, almost triple its 2021 size. In the U.S., shopping channels like QVC and HSN faded after their 1990s and 2000s peak and largely skipped Gen Z. TikTok Shop is rebuilding the format for mobile screens — and beauty brands are following the volume.
Tarte Cosmetics has generated more than $19 million via TikTok Live in the last 12 months, ranking it the number-seven brand overall on the channel, per the company. "The part of Live that excites me is that you're not just converting demand; you're creating it," said founder and CEO Maureen Kelly, who sold on QVC in the early 2000s.
Tarte's Lives are usually led by makeup creators like Lexi Rosenstein, with 150,000 followers, and Kelly Rose Sarno, with 820,000 — not celebrities. Kelly said the brand's years-old CC Undereye Corrector gained unprecedented momentum from live demos of its concealing power. "I learned how important demonstration was, and how quickly you have to explain why somebody needs something," she said of her QVC years.
Length matters. Mega Live events run 12 hours and users register in advance. Kelly said 24-hour Lives can produce five times the GMV of a 12-hour Live, because the algorithm promotes a stream more aggressively the longer it runs.
How are hosts and programming built?
Host selection and format carry the results. "A great Live host is like part salesperson, part entertainer, part educator and part best friend," said Kelly. Salpekar agreed: "Host credibility definitely matters…[and] how well you engage the audience. It's kind of like HSN/QVC crowd work, but it's two-way; it's much more digital and interactive."
Makeup artist and educator Erica Taylor, who has 2.5 million TikTok followers and has hosted Lives for brands including InnBeauty Project, leads with teaching. "I learned from working at a makeup counter and interacting with real life clients that instead of selling, you teach, and if you teach, you never have to sell," she said. She caps her product count at four per Live, though TikTok Shop encourages around 10.
Engagement tactics now standard on the channel include:
- Flash sales and gifts with purchase
- Live Auctions, a feature TikTok Shop added earlier this year, with hosts sounding bells or buzzers
- Moderators flagging key chat questions on larger Lives
"We like to call [our lives] beauty-tainment first, and commerce second," said Kelly.
Who else is cashing in?
Dr. Groot, the LG H&H-owned Korean hair care brand that debuted in the U.S. in 2023, parlayed its Live success into a Sephora launch this spring, working with e-commerce agency SuperOrdinary. Its four Live bestsellers: hair density shampoo and conditioner at $33 each; a $26 roll-on scalp serum for hair thickening; and an in-shower Scalp & Hair Hydrating Treatment at $33.
The brand has pulled back on discounts. "We definitely [used to] do more discounting, but as we've matured and gone into different retailers, there are additional considerations when we think about that — we don't want to be a brand that's always on discount," said Jamie Mori, LG H&H USA's head of digital. Kelly framed the same trade-off: "Discounts can get someone in the room, but it won't be the reason why they stay…the best Lives have to feel, in my opinion, like access and not clearance."
Retailers have entered too. Ulta Beauty hosts Lives around launches and campaigns; Sephora tapped Mikayla Nogueira of POV Beauty for its first TikTok Live in September. E.l.f. Beauty unveiled its hair care line via Live before retail, and Fenty teased a new "Uncensored" shade of its Stunna Stix Soft-Glide Matte Lipstick at the Mega Live.
"New products need a lot more education and introduction than existing heroes, and Live can work for existing heroes, but it works particularly well for new products," said Salpekar. He added that TikTok Shop next plans to "introduce more interaction models into Live," signaling that the format's toolset — and the budgets behind it — will keep expanding.
