The takeaway
- The Outset, co-founded by Scarlett Johansson and Kate Foster Lengyel in 2022, announced it is winding down operations.
- The brand launched with five products priced $32–$54 and grew to roughly 14; the Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum remained its bestseller.
- The closure follows other celebrity beauty shutdowns: Gwen Stefani's GXVE Beauty and Drew Barrymore's Flower Beauty.
The Outset, the skin-care brand Scarlett Johansson co-founded with Kate Foster Lengyel in 2022, is closing. The company confirmed the move in a statement on its website this week: "After an incredible journey, The Outset has made the decision to wind down operations."
Orders already placed will still ship, but the site has stopped taking new purchases.
The signs were there. In the weeks before the announcement, The Outset ran an end-of-summer sale with markdowns reaching 50 percent. The brand had also kept releasing products as recently as this past January, when it launched the Total Clarity Dark Spot Serum.
Johansson was personally invested in the line. She told NewBeauty it grew out of her own needs after years of adult acne, and she had targeted QVC from the start — the brand made its TV debut there in 2024.
The Outset built its identity around Johansson's sensitive skin and a pared-back philosophy the actress liked to call "the white tee of skin care." It launched with five products priced between $32 and $54 and eventually grew to roughly 14. The Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum held its number-one bestseller status right up to the end, paired with the Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser and Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer in the simple three-step routine Johansson herself used.
The closure adds The Outset to a growing list of star-backed beauty lines that have recently exited the market. Gwen Stefani's GXVE Beauty shut down earlier this year. Drew Barrymore's Flower Beauty closed last fall after a 13-year run.
Shoppers can still buy The Outset products while stock lasts at retailers including Amazon, Nordstrom, QVC and Credo Beauty. The wind-down closes a chapter on one of the most high-profile minimalist celebrity brands of the past three years — and underscores how crowded the celebrity beauty shelf has become.
